Important Health Update: Protecting Against Measles

There have recently been cases of measles across the West Midlands. Measles is highly infectious and can spread quickly in busy places like nurseries and schools. It can cause serious health complications, especially in babies, pregnant women, and those with weaker immune systems.
How to protect your child

  • The MMR vaccine is the best protection. It is safe, effective and free through your GP.

  • Children need two doses for full protection:

    • First dose at 12 months

    • Second dose at 3 years 4 months (moving to 18 months for children born after 1 July 2024).

  • If your child has missed a dose, you can catch up at any age.

  • A pork-free version (Priorix) is also available.

Symptoms of measles

Please look out for:

  • High temperature

  • Runny or blocked nose, cough, sneezing

  • Sore red eyes

  • Rash starting on the face/behind the ears and spreading

  • Small white spots inside the mouth

What to do if you suspect measles

If your child shows symptoms:

  • Keep them at home and do not bring them to nursery.

  • Contact your GP by phone (do not attend the surgery unless advised).

  • Your GP will arrange safe care to avoid spreading the illness to others.

By ensuring your child is fully vaccinated, you are helping to protect them, your family, and our nursery community.
