Rainbow Day Nursery welcomes children who may have a specific medical condition, developmental delay or special educational needs. On a day to day basis, key workers monitor and assess the needs and progress of children with special needs. The SENCO and Key workers liaise with parents and, where necessary, professional agencies such as, therapists, health visitors, psychologists, social workers and paediatricians in order to plan and develop IEPs (Individual Educational Plans) to meet the child’s specific needs. Activities are adapted to suit the requirements of the special needs child and to encourage them to develop independence and confidence. We are legally obliged to pass the child’s assessment records to their school unless a written request from the parents not to do so is received.

The aims of this policy are:

  • To create an environment that meets the Special Educational Needs of each child;

  • To ensure the Special Educational Needs of children are identified, assessed and provided for;

  • To make clear the expectations of all partners in the process;

  • To identify the roles and responsibilities of staff in providing for children’s Special Educational Needs;

  • To enable all children to have full access to all elements of the nursery’s curriculum;

  • To ensure that parents are able to play their part in supporting their child’s education;

  • To ensure that our children have a voice in this process.
